As Director of Childcare at Trinity's Tiny Treasures preschool in Hutchinson, Tonya Deal has seen a lot change over her 25-year career, but one thing has remained constant---her dedication to children's growth and development. This passion for her profession is one reason why she was chosen as our May Child Care Provider of the Month.
"It was a complete surprise," said Tonya. "I knew that it was a thing and I've seen past interviews, and it's a privilege. We've all been doing this for a very long time, and we all really enjoy it. So, it's nice to be recognized for it."
Tonya's journey in the field of childcare began in high school with a part-time job in childcare. Little did she know that this would sow the seeds for a lifelong vocation. After graduating with her bachelor's degree, Tonya decided to pursue her passion further by obtaining a teaching degree. Her dedication did not go unnoticed, and she was entrusted with the responsibility of spearheading the preschool program at Trinity United Methodist Church—a role she embraced wholeheartedly. She then decided to pursue her master's degree, all the while remaining steadfast in her commitment to nurturing young minds.
Reflecting on the evolution of the childcare landscape over the years, Tonya notes the increasing emphasis on the educational aspect, alongside traditional childcare practices. "The community has become a lot more involved," she observes. "There are a lot of agencies focusing more on the educational side of it rather than just the childcare side, which we love."
Tonya's commitment to excellence extends beyond the confines of her classrooms. With the support of grants from the Reno County Childcare Task Force, she has been able to enhance the quality of facilities and services offered at her center. From remodeled playgrounds to technologically advanced classrooms, Tonya has a strong vision for providing a nurturing environment for children.
"My favorite part is interacting with the little ones—three, four, and five-year-olds who are just so full of life and enthusiasm. They love being here, and I love being a part of their journey.”
